Description: The interface between design and construction is most evident in foundation construction. The critical triangle of construction inspection, materials testing, and geotechnical engineering is critical to a structure and project’s success. This presentation provides an insight into the need for each discipline to support each other and maintain open communication. Geotechnical design is typically based on a few “peepholes” into the subsurface. With a potential for deviation between these peepholes, the construction inspector must be aware of any deviations and must be knowledgeable in soils, and understand the aspects of the geotechnical design to be aware of these deviations. The construction inspector must then clearly communicate to the construction team inclusive of the Engineer of Record to review for potential changes to construction or material selection. We will briefly discuss testing procedures in the lab and the field, tools of the trade, and knowledge from everyday experience that relies on a strong Geotechnical and Special Inspection Team.
Attendees will earn one (1) PDH.
